Five Minutes With Lucas

Lucas is a sports-fanatic from Texas and moved to Rotterdam a few years ago. He has a lot of responsibility, working as Lendahand’s Head of Growth and owning his English language school. When he’s not working, Lucas enjoys taking his dog Remi out for walks, making his famous peanut butter-banana oats, and going to the gym.

Name: Lucas Weaver

Role: Head of Growth

What does a typical day at Lendahand look like?

Before COVID, a typical day for me started by unpacking my backpack and plugging in all of my chargers. I always have quite a few devices and cords to get organized. Then once I’m all set up, I would grab my first cup of coffee and usually chat with people in the kitchen.

My days were normally split between meetings and working alone with my headphones on. I tried to pop around the office a couple of times a day to visit with people on other sides of the office and make sure everyone’s in a good mood.

Nowadays, my Lendahand life is much more boring. I work from home by myself and take walks to Vroesenpark every other day to grab a coffee at the Vroesen Pavilion just to get some fresh air.

What is the last time you lent somebody a hand?

The last thing I did that comes to mind was, help a friend move two washing machines. He had a new one delivered, but because of Corona, they wouldn’t take it inside or get his old one from inside. So I went over and helped him move the old one out and the new one in.

How do you impact the lives of others on a daily basis?

I usually stay pretty busy in my professional life, but I’m still very generous with my time. I’m always willing to help people who are working hard. Whether that’s introducing them to someone or helping them with something technical. Selfishly I think that stuff all comes back to you later on.

What are the hands-on things one can do to empower others?

I think people can just try and consider the position of the other side more. One of the things that the Black Lives Matter movement showed was that there are a lot of people out there who live in the same places but go through totally different life experiences. I think the King said it well when he said having nuanced conversations and really listening to the other people will benefit all sides, no matter which side you take on any issue.

What’s a crowdfunding project that still inspires you?

I think MILAAP is inspirational. There is so much poverty in India, and to see MILAAP doing everything they are to try and help these hard-working individuals get out of it is a great example for the rest of the world. It’s a difficult thing MILAAP is trying to do, especially with all of the difficulties India is facing with COVID. But their effort doesn’t stop.
