      The project

Prisca Duro Muganda is a mother of two children. She lives in Bumala Western Kenya where the climate is mainly tropical, with variations due to altitude. She is the bread winner and so energy sources and related costs is a main thing in her budget.

For lighting Prisca entirely depends on the two pressure lamps she has that consume paraffin whose pump prices have increased with the ever increasing cost of living. This has really affected her and her family both economically and health wise.  One of her child in her eighth year of primary school has already developed chest problems as a result of inhaling the fumes from the lamp. As one can imagine the visits to the hospital have become recurrent making life difficult from hospital expenses.

The solar home system will definitely provide clean and a complete lighting solution as well as improve the health of Prisca and her children. The savings from the use of the solar solution will mean she can afford extra items on her tight budget. This part of the country has many of such stories!

      Impact

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
