      The project

Sitela Anyango is an epitome of determination, hard work and optimism. With six adult and married children, Sitela is still energetic, going about her chores to fend for herself and her grandchildren who she often takes care of.

A significant portion of her meagre income from livestock (one cow) and selling of second-hand clothes goes towards purchase of kerosene for lighting and cooking. Poor rural households were the biggest losers in the June 2018 fuel price review in Kenya. Sitela is forced to live in total darkness when income dwindle.

Her grandchildren in the attached photo are in a neighbour’s house watching TV. The neighbour bought a full 7 pack Solar Home Lighting System that comprises of 4 bulbs, a battery, a panel, a radio, a torch and 19inch flat screen TV.

One of Sitela’s daughters has committed to support her mom purchase the same solar home lighting system at a cost of USD 36 per month.

Sitela smiles at the future with optimism. In her words, Solar Home lighting System shall light up her life in her aging years

      Impact

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
