      Summary

The Philippines is considered primarily as an agricultural country yet its farmers are considered as one of its most neglected sector of the society. Many programs were implemented by the government for the thru the farmers with the intention of promoting their welfare. One of those programs is the agrarian reform program whose objective is to equitably distribute the land amongst the farmers.

GARB-MPC is a primary cooperative organized by farmer-beneficiaries who were given a piece of land under the Philippine agrarian reform program. It was established in 2010 for the purpose of promoting the economic welfare of its 162 farmer-members. They are operating in the province of Laguna which is about 60 kms away from Manila.

The coop is engaged in organic farming producing vegetables and fruits covering some 32 hectares of farm land. . The coop plans bell pepper, cabbage, egg plant, cucurbits, lettuce, carrots, corn, leafy vegetables and upland rice. The coop acts as wholesales of organic vegetables supplying known supermarkets in Manila.

GARB-MPC knew of NPFC thru client Mrs. Erlinda Ocba who also helps the coop market their product to selected groceries and supermarkets. The coop applied for a loan with Lendahand's partner, NPFC, to support their farm input requirements. They are also planning to acquire their own mini-truck as presently they are just renting to make deliveries of their harvest.

With the partnership with NPFC, the coop is hoping to increase their production and reach out to many other outlets with their organic produce. This they hope will lead to better economic benefits for their members and their families.
