The project

Samuel Theuri 31 years of age has been an entrepreneur all his life having sold his first 20 bags (a gift from his mum) of maize while still in high school. Samuel is also a trained accountant and at one point he established an accounting consultancy to help small shopkeepers in his rural town file their income tax returns. In 2015, he decided to pursue his longtime passion of trading in grain and established Ellisam Holdings, a company that processes and trades in Maize flour. Within one year, Samuel has grown its revenue from USD 2,900 to USD 69,000.

Samuel’s immediate need is to secure quality maize. Samuel intentionally, solely, buys his maize from small local small farmers organised into farmer self help groups. By so doing Samuel ensures the livelihoods of the farmers are consistently improved. Samuel plans to expand his business by investing in a small lab to test the maize. Aflatoxin poisoning is a rampant issue, constantly in the news, in Kenya. Samuel is heartily driven to eliminating this scourge. Moreover, Samuel plans to diversify into producing high nutrient porridge flour specifically for malnourished young school going pupils.
