The project
Most of the primary government schools are situated in rural and semi-rural areas in Manipur. Although they are functional, they only have primary level standards/ classes. Furthermore, these schools do not have any concrete infrastructure or facilities. Reportedly in most cases either there are no teachers or if any, were on a contract basis. Most of these rural schools are occupied by security forces in conflict and violence prone areas.
The families of these children are engaged in agricultural activities and other domestic chores which is why, they are sent to shabby schools as their parents are out in the cultivation fields the whole day. Most importantly girls do not go for higher education. Beside poverty, when they attain teenage they become helpful for house hold chores and agriculture or cultivation work.
The education system in the state is at a critical juncture. It is a must if must if peace and normalcy were to be restored in the state and unless it is improved at the primary level, Manipur will remain backward in terms of the education system.
Chanura, through Milaap, has been supporting children and schools in this area by providing them with Education loans. 48 mothers from Manipur have come forward to seek Education loans for their children. This project will benefit these students to have a brighter future.
They will be able to pay their school fees, purchase necessary textbooks and stationery items and school uniform. It will go a long way towards empowering them and helping them find their own paths towards success.
