Why zero hunger is key for building a better world.

According to the United Nations “public investment in agriculture globally is declining. Small-scale food producers and family farmers require much greater support.” What the UN cannot stress enough is that “Investment in the agriculture sector is critical for reducing hunger and poverty, improving food security, creating employment and building resilience to disasters and shocks.” Food for thought, right?

Who suffers from hunger?

In 2017 one in nine people were undernourished. The vast majority in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region with the highest prevalence of hunger. One fifth of the entire population suffers from hunger, causing nearly half of all deaths in children below the age five. Hunger and malnutrition tend to cause less productivity, which in turn makes it harder to improve one's livelihood.

A world without hunger

The UN wants to eradicate hunger by 2030. A world without hunger can positively impact our economies, health, education, equality and social development. If done right, agriculture, forestry and fisheries can provide nutritious food and generate decent incomes, while supporting people-centered rural development and protecting the environment. But first a profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed.

Your role

What can you do to nourish today’s 800 million people in need plus the additional two million increase expected by 2050? You can support local farmers like we described here, fight food waste and use your power as a consumer. Every purchase you make is a chance to vote with your wallet. How you choose to spend your money truly makes a difference.

End hunger

Lendahand has a couple of partners active in agriculture, their projects can be seen as powerful tools to end poverty and hunger. By investing in people and businesses via Lendahand, you’ll contribute directly to our shared goal of a world without hunger in 2030.
