Belghoria Janakalyan Samity (BJS) is a not for profit organization based in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. It was formed with a single goal of alleviating poverty through women empowerment. It aims to reach families in the most underserved and financially poor areas in West Bengal.
BJS focuses on holistic development of the weaker section of the society, especially women, providing both financial and non-financial services. It uses microfinance as a tool for poverty alleviation and focuses on building self-sufficiency among women.
In line with its goal of making women self-sufficient, BJS adopted a methodology of forming women into self-help groups. Through this structure, it gives out loans to women who do not have the ability to bear the expenses to educate their children. Children in these villages usually drop out at an early age because their families find it difficult to bear the expenses of educating them further. In 2013, BJS designed its education program to help children of these deprived families go to school.
With financial assistance, women admit their children to schools, pay tuition fees, purchase books and stationery, pay for the school buses, etc. Through the program, BJS has been able to impact the lives of nearly 800 families till date, and it needs help to continue its work to expand its reach to many more deprived areas in West Bengal.
