Bihar is one the most impoverished states in India. Even though urban Bihar is growing at a fast rate today, it still has the lowest per capita income in the whole country. 80% of Bihar's population is engaged in agricultural activitities with members still dependent on nature to a great extent through animal husbandry, poultry, dairy, fishing and traditional agriculture etc.
The average monthly income of such families is less than $100 as a result of which the land they work on is usually on lease. Due to their hand-to-mouth situation, the families try to cut down on labour costs by ensuring that all family members work on the field. Children, after returning from school, help out their parents with farming. With such conditions, availing loans to better their prospects has been difficult. However, DCBS has been supporting women and their families in this area by providing them with small business loans.
Through this project, these communities of Katihar district in Bihar, will benefit socio-economically. The loan amount help 102 women invest in their various businesses- dairy, animal husbandry, poultry, fishing, petty shops, pan shop (areca nuts wrapped in betel leaves). As the women of the households would be the recipients of funds, it will go a long way towards empowering them and helping them find their own financial footing.
