      El proyecto

Households in Sub Sahara Africa headed by women are faced with many challenges and are in most cases impoverished. Makongeni Village is home to Stellamaris who lives with her seven children.

Besides other struggles to make ends meet for her large family, poor lighting and eminent dangers from use of paraffin further complicates her family’s life. She uses small paraffin tin lamps locally known as `Koroboi’for lighting. These lamps are the most dangerous for families as they are ready sources of deaths from fires. They are slow killers to children due to air pollution.

Fearing dangers paused by tin lamps at night and cut on paraffin costs, Stellamaris has bought a dry cell torch to use in the night. She has lost honor among her fellow women who gossip about her soot covered walls. Solar Home Lighting Systems wave has hit Machakos County. A number of households like the one Stellamaris has taken photo in are owning TVs and are able to enjoy clean lighting as well as charge their phones.

Stellamaris is extremely hopeful that from her meagre income, she can be able to purchase a TV and install Solar lighting System. The set she would like to own comes with a 19inch colour TV, 4 bulbs, 1 battery and Solar Panel. She smiles at the opportunity to improve her living standard and offer an opportunity to many other people in the community to charge their phones at a small fee.

      Impacto

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
