      El proyecto

One of the leading populous counties in Kenya is Homabay. Milaphine Akinyi, a single mother of four lives at Oyugis which is situated in Rachuonyo sub county in Homabay.

Armed with optimism in life after the demise of her husband, Akinyi is one inspiring story of hard work. She fends for her family from small scale farming and a petty grocery shop.

She has managed to put up a semi-permanent house for her children standing on 1-acre land left by her husband.

The entire neighbourhood has no dream of ever accessing electricity and it is always dark at sun set. Akinyi uses kerosene for lighting which forces her to close her shop early and look after her children before the lamps go off. Kerosene costs are high and she can only afford 1 litre per night (USD 1) which gives insufficient as well as unhealthy light.

She has managed to save USD 50 from her meagre income to make a down payment for a Home Solar Lighting System comprising four bulbs, 55Watts solar panel, 9Ah battery, a Radio, a torch, a TV and a phone charger at USD 800.

With sufficient clean light, TV, Radio and phone charger, Akinyi smiles at the dawn of a new era for her family and neighbourhood. She shall make USD 3 additional revenue per month from phone charging. She shall create employment for 2 people.

      Impacto

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
