      Le projet

A tight, impenetrable community with culture that may seem controversial is lighting up to irresistible solar technologies with remarkable excitement. Kinisoi Kuyioni, a single mother of five exudes this excitement. Single mothers in this community are treated with disrespect. Kinisoi, armed with resolve and optimism to educate her children and fend for family is an astute cattle keeper. Cattle comes before everything else and is highly prized by the community.

She arises before dawn to milk her cows and distribute milk in the neighbourhood and prepare her children to trek for miles to school. Kerosene lit lamp according to Kinisoi is a big waste of her meagre income besides un ending health challenges for her growing children.  At night, she is unable to attend her cattle and she can’t wake up earlier to feed and milk her cows due to darkness. Her children sleep early to avoid effects of dimly lit kerosene lamp for study. Her homestead is lifeless after dusk.

From her meagre income, Kinisoi can afford a new solar system that comprises three bulbs, a radio and a phone charger at USD 130.

Her children will enjoy clean and abundant light for studies, she will catch current news through her portable radio, and with the bulbs, her milking shade shall be well lit as early as 4 am. The system shall offer her business increased productivity and an additional revenue stream from charging neighbours’ phones. Kinisoi believes solar technologies are her long-awaited saviour bringing affordable products that bring real transformation at her doorstep.

      Impact

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
