      Le projet

One would imagine that a primary school teacher leads a better life than the rest of community members who are not employed. That is not the case with Samuel Ole Tumpes who lives in a far flung Ololosoiso village in Narok County. The community, with a tight hold on its somewhat retrogressive culture is still underdeveloped in many ways.

A father of four school going children leads a quiet life at his mud walled house. As dusk approaches, his jovial wife lights two kerosene lamps and the children gather around it to do their homework. The compound is usually dark, with faint rays of light escaping through small ventilations on the walls and roof. Life comes to a grinding halt as the family endure poor light and soot from the lamp until they retire to bed.

Samuel values his children’s’ education. In the recent past, their performance has been deteriorating due to limited time of study at home. His concern has led him to research far and wide in the community. He discovered that his county is one of the lowest connectivity areas in rural Kenya.

Bright, clean and abundant light to Samuel is a great revolution in his homestead. He looks forward to his children doing their studies comfortably and his compound being adequately lit as he enjoys listening to his radio for country news.

      Impact

BnF focuses on sustainable energy projects in rural Kenya, offering households a 12-month payment plan to purchase a solar home system. The system enables clients to generate sufficient energy to power many basic necessities such as lights, radios, televisions, and other essential appliances. Solar home systems reduce reliance on polluting and health-threatening fuels such as kerosene, firewood, and coal for families' lighting and cooking needs.

Electricity opens new economic opportunities for families, enabling household incomes to grow progressively. It provides access to information and entertainment, allowing the children to spend time studying in the evenings and empowering women to engage more in household and local-level decision-making. It stands to reason that entire rural communities' livelihoods benefit from access to clean energy as their productivity, efficiency, and health prospers.
