Impact
upOwa provides easy access to clean energy for people who live without access to the national electrical grid in Cameroon. They offer affordable solar home systems, which customers can pay for in small installments over 18-36 months.
The arrival of electricity in a neighborhood boosts the local economy as lighting extends opening hours of shops, which results in increased wages. Lighting also improves personal security at night and allows children to study after dusk, helping them obtain better results at school. Further, it provides people access to information through radios and to communication thanks to their charged mobile phones. Solar home systems avoid the use of toxic fuels like kerosene and wood which are harmful to health and cause respiratory problems due to their fumes. By the end of 2022, upOwa will have created 1,000 jobs, saved 2,000 tons of CO², and will have provided electricity access to more than 1 million people.
