  • Now that Atiqah has taken over her mother's bakery, she is focusing on growth, with the help of Funding Societies. She invested in new, modern ovens, allowing her to produce more cookies. As a result, the bakery employs four permanent employees and several part-timers.

      The project

This week was particularly busy for baker Atiqah, with a flood of orders for Eid al-Fitr. Her bakery, founded in 2015, specializes in making Semperit cookies. This is the Malaysian variant of shortbread and is very popular as a delicacy during Eid al-Fitr. Under her mother's leadership, the bakery previously focused only on these festive periods.

When Atiqah took over in 2020, she saw opportunities for growth and dared to look further. Determined to expand the bakery, she sought financial help from Funding Societies. Thanks to a loan she could easily apply for online, Atiqah invested in new ovens, ingredients, and packaging materials, allowing her to produce more throughout the year. With the growth, the range of cookies and products has expanded, and she has been able to hire four permanent and several part-time employees.

      Impact

SMEs comprise about 60% of Southeast Asia's GDP and provide most jobs, but they face a $320B financing gap. Funding Societies has stepped in to bridge this gap, financing over €815 million through more than 3 million business loans in the last five years. Their focus lies in short-term credit, typically under 12 months, tailored to meet the needs of SMEs.

The impact of their loans is significant. About 76% of SMEs use their loans for working capital. Many acknowledge that this financing was essential to keep their businesses open and maintain their workforce. Furthermore, Funding Societies fosters women's economic empowerment by supporting female entrepreneurs, who comprise 24% of their borrowers.

Investing in Funding Societies on Lendahand promotes financial inclusion and social mobility in Southeast Asia, more specifically in Indonesia and Vietnam. With Funding Societies, you can contribute to regional development and make a real difference in people's lives.
