The project

Gold Coffee brings together 593 smallholder coffee farmers in Peru to produce high-quality coffee and build a more sustainable future.

Smallholder farmers are among the most vulnerable groups in the global trading system. They often have limited access to financing and are therefore forced to sell their harvest to intermediaries at low prices. Certification, such as Fairtrade, organic or Rainforest Alliance, opens doors to international markets where fair and sustainable production is valued. This can contribute to better prices, decent working conditions and more room for farmers to invest in their future.

Gold Coffee needs upfront working capital to purchase coffee directly from its members. This enables the cooperative to pay farmers promptly, process the coffee and export it under better conditions. It strengthens the organization and contributes to higher incomes for its members.

Gold Coffee supports smallholder coffee producers through timely and fair payments, technical assistance, and access to financing. In 2025, 95% of the cooperative’s sales were certified under internationally recognized standards, including Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and Organic certifications. As a result, the vast majority of members benefit from the premiums and protections these standards provide. The Fairtrade premium is reinvested directly into the cooperative and its members, covering areas such as price incentives for producers, quality management, technical assistance, training, and social strengthening programs.

Beyond premium distribution, Gold Coffee provides members with a range of support services, including farm-level technical assistance, support in accessing state financing for crop maintenance, and infrastructure improvements such as drying stations and local warehouses. The cooperative also helps producers diversify their income through other activities, such as farming and raising animals, reducing their dependence on coffee alone.

Gold Coffee continues to strengthen its sustainability and inclusion efforts. In March 2025, the cooperative launched a reforestation pilot with the aim of expanding it over time. It is also working on women’s and youth committees, supported by dedicated funds.
