SPBD Tonga 25

SPBD Tonga gives more than 75,700 women access to finance. Because paid employment opportunities are scarce in Tonga, many women rely on small businesses in agriculture, fishing, or crafts. With a loan from SPBD, they can work towards greater financial independence.

The project

SPBD Tonga supports women through group lending. As many as 99% of its loans are provided to women.

According to SPBD Director Greg Casagrande, women often reinvest the income from their businesses in their families and communities. They use it, for example, to pay for their children’s education, buy ingredients for nutritious meals, and invest in their homes. In this way, the impact of a loan extends beyond the business itself.

Take Llima, for example. She weaves traditional mats from pandanus leaves in her workshop in Tonga. With her loan, she was able to buy more materials and increase her sales. Her products now also reach Tongans living abroad.

With your investment, women in Tonga can increase their income. A higher income not only gives them greater financial independence, but can also enable them to invest in their families and communities, for example in education, food, and housing.

Lives improved

Tonga's female entrepreneurs often struggle to access financing, business support, and opportunities for growth. SPBD Tonga directly addresses these challenges by providing microloans exclusively to women, enabling them to start and expand their businesses.

Since its founding, SPBD Tonga has disbursed thousands of loans, totaling millions in funding for female-led enterprises. Women meet weekly to make repayments, receive business training, and build their savings—helping them achieve long-term financial stability.
