The project

For many women in southern Mexico, entrepreneurship is an important source of income. They may run a small neighborhood shop, sell food at the market, or make handicrafts from home. Despite their hard work, they often cannot obtain a loan from a bank. Due to low incomes and a lack of collateral, access to financing remains limited.

MásKapital has been addressing this challenge for the past twenty years. The microfinance institution provides short-term group loans to female entrepreneurs. Women form groups and each receive an individual loan tailored to their often small-scale businesses. This allows them to borrow flexibly for investments such as additional inventory, a sewing machine, or materials.

Today, MásKapital serves more than 27,000 active clients across nine states in Mexico, and 100% of its portfolio consists of female entrepreneurs. With your investment, MásKapital can provide more women in Mexico with access to financing and help strengthen their financial independence.

Lives improved

In Oaxaca, one of the poorest regions of Mexico, 58.4% of the population lives in multidimensional poverty (CONEVAL, 2022). Many families rely on small-scale income-generating activities, such as a home-based kiosk, market stalls, or traditional crafts. Without access to formal financing, it is difficult to grow or stabilize these businesses. Women are especially affected, as they have fewer economic opportunities while also carrying most of the responsibilities at home.

MásKapital addresses this challenge directly. With 100% of their clients being women, they make a clear contribution to gender equality and local entrepreneurship. They provide group loans in which women form small groups and support each other throughout the loan term, while remaining individually responsible for their own loan. This approach makes credit accessible to women who would otherwise be excluded.

With loans starting at 1,000 MXN (about 45 euros), women can start or grow their businesses. This leads to more stable incomes, greater independence, and stronger decision-making power. Every loan is an investment in lasting progress for women and their communities in Oaxaca.
