SOFIPA 23

In San Pablo Villa de Mitla, in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, the Martínez Lázaro family has kept the tradition of Zapotec textiles alive for three generations. With a loan from Sofipa, Heidi and Eder scale up their production and provide employment for 14 local workers.

The project

Heidi and Eder have led the atelier Mictlantecuhtli for more than eight years. Involved in this craft since their teenage years, they carry the Zapotec textile tradition forward. Their designs preserve the essence of traditional backstrap looms, now adapted to pedal looms to speed up production.

In southern Mexico, access to financing is far from a given for many women. Sofipa breaks through that barrier with group loans: women form a group together, act as guarantors for one another, and receive guidance from a coordinator. During weekly meetings, they strengthen their financial resilience, their confidence, and their bond with one another.

With a loan from Sofipa, Heidi and Eder can tackle one of their biggest challenges: purchasing raw materials, whose prices constantly fluctuate. With this financing, they set up a fund to secure their purchases. This leads to higher production and additional jobs for people in their community.

Through this traditional craft, the workshop not only offers a secure livelihood but also contributes to the development of 14 families. For employees with families, this work means access to education, healthcare, and a better quality of life for their children.

Financing is critically needed in southeastern Mexico, where Sofipa operates. Historically, this region has faced the greatest challenges, with the state of Oaxaca showing alarming poverty rates. This is the result of deficiencies in education, infrastructure, and basic services, which have hindered development. The situation for women in this area is even more difficult, further widening the gap. A loan empowers women, creating equal opportunities and making them stronger.
