SOFIPA 25
Three generations, one craft: in San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Mexico, the Martínez Lázaro family is keeping the Zapotec textile tradition alive. Thanks to a loan from Sofipa, Heidi and Eder were able to grow their workshop and create jobs for 14 people from the local community.

The project
In San Pablo Villa de Mitla, in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, the Martínez Lázaro family has kept the tradition of Zapotec textile craftsmanship alive for three generations. Heidi and Eder have been running the Mictlantecuhtli workshop for more than eight years. They have both been involved in the craft since their teenage years.
Fluctuating raw material prices are one of the workshop’s biggest challenges. With financing from Sofipa, Heidi and Eder were able to set up a fund to purchase raw materials on time, even when prices rise. As a result, they can increase production and have created additional employment in the village.
For the 14 employees and their families, this work means more than just an income. It provides access to education and healthcare and contributes to better living conditions.
In southern Mexico, obtaining financing is not easy for many women. Sofipa makes financing accessible through group loans: women form a group, guarantee each other’s loans and receive guidance from a coordinator. During the weekly meetings, they strengthen their financial resilience and work together to grow their businesses.
Will you give women like Heidi and Eder the opportunity to grow and become more financially resilient?

SOFIPA
Impact
Financing is critically needed in southeastern Mexico, where Sofipa operates. Historically, this region has faced the greatest challenges, with the state of Oaxaca showing alarming poverty rates. This is the result of deficiencies in education, infrastructure, and basic services, which have hindered development. The situation for women in this area is even more difficult, further widening the gap. A loan empowers women, creating equal opportunities and making them stronger.
